Assessment of the Effect of Policy Implementation on Civil Unrest: The Nigeria Perspective (2012 - 2025)

Abstract

The study examines the effect of public policy implementation on civil unrest in Nigeria with special reference to selected policies implemented between 2012- 2025. The present Nigeria democratic republic has experienced several civil unrest that affects socio-economic and political development of the country. Previous studies conducted in this area seem not to have established a correlation between public policies implementation and civil unrest within the context of Nigerian society. The study adopts qualitative research approach which relies on primary data- interview and secondary data. Using purposive sampling method, 20 participants was selected which include policy makers, public policy analysts and Nigerian youths from Lagos State. Data collected was analyzed using thematic analytical tool. The findings of the study show that transparency in policy implementation has a significant effect on strike action by Nigeria; and that citizen’s engagement and participation is significantly related to protest in Nigeria. The study concludes by recommending among others that engaging the citizens to participate in the implementation of any policy programme which will enhance inclusive governance within the society and consequently reduces citizens level of aggressiveness towards governance.
